Two new scholarship funds for BSHS
graduates:
[both are described below]
l. "The Janice Bond Scholarship
Fund" at Howard College
[Set up by the Big Spring
Educational Employees Federal Credit Union]
Soon after the death of Janice Rosson Bond on April
26, 2008, the Big Spring Educational Employees Federal Credit Union set up a
fund in her honor at Howard College, for graduates of Big Spring High School.
The Credit Union made an initial donation to start the fund for students of BSHS who wished to attend Howard
College.
Janice helped to found the Big Spring High School Exes
Association in 1973. She became secretary at the first meeting, and headed
the organization under the title Secretary for 35 years until her death. After
the first couple of years, she also kept the database of address information and
published the Exes Newsletter. During her last 20 years, she was on
the board of BSEEFCU (the named credit union). Their interest in honoring
her is understandable in this light.
The scholarships in this particular fund are to be
used by BSHS grads attending Howard College.

2. BSHS Exes
Association Janice Bond Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund is administered by the Big Spring Area
Community Foundation.
There is no limitation regarding college the students choose to attend.
The full name of the fund is to be the
"Big Spring High School Exes Association Janice Bond Memorial Scholarship Fund."
Recipients of the scholarships will be graduating seniors of Big Spring High
School, as selected by the BSHS principal and counselors who may be in office at
graduation time from year to year. The recipients shall be chosen with
consideration given to academic standing, financial need, civic responsibility
and character. Exhibit A at the end of this page spells this out a little
more in detail.
Anyone who is interested is encouraged to donate to the fund.
One hope is that classes having reunions will make annual donations to the fund.
Individuals are urged to contribute. All of the forms of contribution are
accepted by the Big Spring Area Community Foundation. Estates, or portions of
estates, may be made to the fund, including property designated in individual's
wills for future use.
The fund is to be an endowment, to be handled in
perpetuity by the Foundation. Donations are irrevocable, once
accepted by the Foundation. Scholarships are to be granted only
from income generated from the funds, and the principal is never to be
diminished in order to grant scholarships. Expenses of administering the fund are
to be paid from the generated income, or from the principal if necessary.
Scholarship grants shall be in the minimum amount of
$500.
The Fund is a 501c3 tax exempt organization and all contributions qualify as
charitable contributions. Deductibility will depend on each contributor’s tax
situation.
EXHIBIT A
Each year the Foundation shall award one or more
Big Spring High School Exes Association Janice Bond Memorial scholarships
subject to the terms and conditions of this Fund Agreement. Recipients of the
scholarship(s) shall be determined based upon the recommendation of the Big
Spring High School counselor(s) and principal from year to year. The Big Spring
High School counselor(s) and principal shall submit the proposed recipient(s) to
the Foundation in writing, with a certification that the proposed recipient(s)
are not related within the 2nd degree to any person participating in
the selection process. The recipients shall be chosen with consideration given
to academic standing, financial need, civic responsibility and character.
COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS are a relative new phenomenon
on the American scene. Our local Foundation was suggested in 1999 by
Charles Beil, chartered in February, 2001. It is currently headed by
President Drew Mouton, a local attorney. For more information on the movement go
